Spotlight on Success: Four TBA Remodelers Win Top Honors
Florida’s reigning Remodeler of the Year Larry Wayne Strickland, CIP,
CAPS, of Capital City Builders and recent Aurora Award winner William
“Kip” Carpenter, CIP, CAPS of Carpenters Construction were double-
Gold Award recipients in the Tallahassee Builders Association (TBA) 2013
Remodelers Showcase Awards presented at a special awards ceremony
September 25, 2013.
The Showcase Awards are sponsored by City Gas – Your Own Utilities
®
and presented by the utilities
representative Vicki O’Neill and 2013 TBA President Shane Lambert, CIP, CAPS. The awards event were
held in the new showroom of TBA member Hi-Tech System Associates, Inc., which provides home theatres
and sound and security systems for new, existing and remodeled homes.
Strickland, who was honored as the best remodeler in the state in 2012 by the Florida Home Builders
Association, won Gold Awards in the categories of Best Bath Under $25,000 and Best Home Rehabilitation
over $150,000. Carpenter, honored in 2013 at southeast-wide Aurora Awards design competition
sponsored by the Southeast Building Conference (SEBC), won two Golds for Best Bathroom $25,000-
$50,000 and Best Kitchen $35,000-$75,000.
Joining Strickland and Carpenter as Gold Award winners were Brian Will, CIP, CAPS of New South Homes,
Inc. for the Best Kitchen over $75,000 and Jerry McFarland, CIP, of James McFarland Builder for the Best
Room Addition over $150,000.
Strickland’s award-winning bathroom modernized a small space, making it more functional and aesthetically
pleasing. A small closet located in the bathroom was removed to allow for a new dual sink vanity with custom
cabinets and a striking granite top. Top-of-the-line Delta faucets were used at the request of the homeowner
to attempt to conserve water.
For his winning Home Rehabilitation project, Strickland transformed a retro-styled home by updating the
bathrooms, remodeling the kitchen, and replacing the roof, siding and windows.
Low-E windows and Hardie Artisan
®
siding improved both the exterior appearance and helped the overall
energy efficiency of the entire house.
Carpenter showed his remodeling dexterity with a winning bathroom and bath. On the bath, he
accommodated a client with a debilitating condition, creating a curb-less shower large enough to walk in or
roll a shower chair into. Installing a hand-held shower head on a slide bar, a tiled bench and grab bars ensured
this shower would be universally accessible.
For his award-winning kitchen, Carpenter fulfilled the hopes of what he described as a “Woman with a
Dream.” The project included removing and replacing a double exterior door with a single door, adding an
aluminum window with a low-e glass vinyl window, relocating the refrigerator and dishwasher, adding lighting,
a wall oven, under-cabinet lights and a bar refrigerator.
In his award-winning kitchen redesign, Will overcame some structural challenges to the existing space to
add function and beauty, including the use of hand-painted tiles from Catalina Island, California, and hand-
turned legs on the refurbished heirloom butcher-block island. Three decorative columns “anchor” the island,
providing visual balance for the bearing point and a convenient raceway for utilities.
McFarland’s room addition was to Unity Eastside Church located on Buck Lake Road. He expanded the back
of the existing structure, adding about 1,500 additional square feet as well as a vaulted ceiling and curved
platform. The new addition tied into the existing roof line which made the project appear as if had been built
there all along.
