Palliative Care
Cultivate the habit of listening intently to the patient’s
answers and create clarifying questions based on the pre-
vious answers. Do not merely complete a checklist with-
out meaning and purpose. Be prepared to listen to their
narratives. A patient’s meaning of life and their treatment
goals are contained within their story.
The authors agree that we integrate many of these pal-
liative notions in our primary care. We encourage you to
integrate these strategies of listening, as we seek to care
compassionately and comprehensively to assess, anticipate
and alleviate each patient’s suffering. It really is about liv-
ing well for “all of life”; not merely at the “end of life.”
