LEIGH PRESS

PRESIDENT

PCC CONSTRUCTION COMPONENTS, INC.

“How has participating in training helped improve your company

or your employee’s performance?”

ABC of Metro

Washington’s

Project Managers’

and Superinten-

dents’ Academy

gives our

employees a broad

picture of the different but interrelated

aspects of our work, including legal

matters, project management and field

work. It speeds up their development

process; instead of learning one step

at a time as they go through their jobs

every day, they get a concentrated,

focused look at these issues. Things make

more sense to them because they see

how one thing builds upon another.

Employees who understand the

importance of managing the contract

are better prepared and more successful.

That improves our ability to be consistent,

on time, and adds value to the company

by creating an environment where

clients enjoy doing business with PCC.

ABC’s other programs, like the Leadership

Development Program (LDP) and

the two and three-hour customized

training sessions are also great for a

small company like ours. They keep us

up-to-date on the current issues and

industry changes. Exposing our young

team members to leadership is also

an invaluable, intangible component

of their professional skills training.

Sending our

younger managers

to programs like

Associated Builders

and Contractors

(ABC) of Metro

Washington’s

project management courses has

increased our company’s productivity.

As they get more education, the young

managers need less supervision from

senior management; that reduces the

time and effort we need to spend to get a

job done.

Training also improves overall morale.

Employees feel they are actually learning

something that will make their job easier

and/or more enjoyable. In addition, since

we are willing to invest in their education,

they get the sense that they are needed

by the company. They feel they have

better job security, and that contributes to

greater job satisfaction.

When our employees acquire additional

skills through training, they become

an even more valuable asset for us—

increasing their stock value—and they

become more eligible for promotion.

Participating in training programs

also provides our employees with

opportunities to be around their peers

and around other companies. They build

relationships that could enhance their

careers both at the present time and in

the future.
