W
inona Area Public Schools (WAPS) offers
an engaging, relevant, and comprehensive
education system for children in preschool
through 12
th
grade. The district currently has five K-4
elementary schools: Goodview, Jefferson, Madison,
Rollingstone and Washington-Kosciusko. All of these
schools, with the exception of Jefferson, also host
preschool programs. Additionally, some of our buildings
host other district departments or community offices,
such as City Hall at the Rollingstone Community School.
The former Central Elementary School building is home
to the WAPS Community Education department which
wraps around the K-12 system with learning and support
opportunities for families, parents, toddlers and adults.
Central is also home to the district’s Miller Mentoring
Program and offices for district physical therapists,
occupational therapists and other specialists. Goodview
Elementary School includes added space for the Early
Childhood Family Education, Early Childhood Special
Education and Community KIDS Preschool programs.
In its fifth school year as a STEM school, Jefferson
Elementary STEM School uses a hands-on, investigative
approach to learning all subjects within a Science
Technology Engineering Math integrated, standards-
based curriculum. Madison Elementary School is home
to a Spanish Language Immersion Program, started in
the 2014-2015 school year for kindergarten, grade one,
and grade two and adding a grade each school year. All
core subjects are taught in the Spanish language and
students also learn about customs and cultures.
The Winona Middle School, opened in 2000, currently
serves children in grades 5-8. Through an exploratory
curriculum, students discover their interests and
hone their talents. In addition to the academic core
of English, social studies, science and math, classes
include exploration in music, industrial technology,
art, family and consumer science, world language and
physical education. As part of Minnesota’s education
initiative, World’s Best Workforce, students begin to
create their college and career pathway through interest
inventories and career exploration. The building houses
the Afterschool Activities Program for middle school-
aged public and non-public students. Adult learners and
community organizations have reaped the benefit of this
great facility by attending Community Education classes
and community events such as concerts, pageants and
more. The summer of 2014 added the bustling energy of
elementary-aged children when Key Kids began hosting
K-12 Education / Private Schools
