On behalf of myself and the Texas Association of Healthcare Interpreters and
Translators, I would like to thank Jorge Ungo for his service and dedication to our
profession and our organization. We are all indebted to his efforts and I applaud the
accomplishments obtained by TAHIT during his presidency.
As America continues on the path towards fundamental changes in the delivery
of care, we are faced with the opportunity to fully integrate our profession into
the initiatives that are shaping the future of healthcare. We are at the center of
culturally-competent and linguistically-appropriate care. We are content experts on
effective communication. Research shows we improve clinical outcomes and improve
patient satisfaction. These are powerful advantages in this new game, and we have to
learn to leverage them in our favor. I urge fresh faith in TAHIT’s purpose.
My vision is to strengthen TAHIT’s organizational infrastructure, recruit a large and
diverse group of stakeholders, make us the leading resource for interpreter training
and education in Texas and have our group be proficient in how to provide Limited-
English Proficiency (LEP) patients and the deaf and hard of hearing equitable access
to healthcare. These are the strategic goals set up by the Board of Directors, and I
accept them fully. The Board of Directors will need your support. I plan to advocate for
them and clear hurdles to make sure we achieve these goals. I make great efforts to
be a modern servant leader, delegate effectively and sincerely encourage everyone
to reach for greater professional accomplishments.
The time is right to take TAHIT to a new level. This organization has to be worthy of
you. There needs to be resurgence in the commitment that it will take to get us there.
For you, this may mean volunteering to be part of a committee, going to the annual
symposium and bringing a clinician along, or simply renewing your membership.
I have always had fun discussing the finer points of interpretation and translation
in lively conversations with other TAHIT members throughout the years. Let’s keep
learning together, laughing together and working together, confident that we will all
lead this organization in the right direction.
In closing, it is because each of you dedicates your talents, your compassion, and
professional careers to benefit the sick and to advocate for our profession that I am
happy to call myself TAHIT’s President for 2013-2014.
