TAHIT
STRENGTHENS
its Leadership Ranks
By JORGE U. UNGO, Former President,
Texas Association of Healthcare Interpreters and Translators
The Board of Directors of the Texas Association of Healthcare Interpreters and
Translators is pleased to welcome and introduce three new board members to
our members, funders and friends. Since its inception in 2004, TAHIT has been a
completely volunteer-powered association ran by industry leaders from across the
state. Founded by Trisha Yacovone and Esther Diaz, TAHIT has flourished into a
strong and innovative grassroots movement. Today, TAHIT welcomes new blood into
the leadership ranks!
2013–2014 President, Oscar Uribe, has worked in the field of medical
interpretation for more than 10 years, in both adult and pediatric hospitals. Currently,
Oscar works as a Language Services Specialist for Texas Health Presbyterian
Hospital Dallas, overseeing the interpretation and translation program at this facility.
He has presented previously at TAHIT’s annual symposia as well as at the American
Translators Association’s Spanish Division and 2012 Interpreter Division Mid-Year
Conference in Orlando. Oscar will present in January 2013 at the International
Medical Interpreter’s Association Conference in Miami Beach, making this his
second appearance at IMIA. He has a Master’s Degree in Diplomacy from Norwich
University in Vermont and a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism from the University of
North Texas. Oscar was born and raised in Texas.
2013–2014 Director of Membership, Biljana Karamehmedovic, is an
English/Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian Independent Interpreter, Translator and Trainer
based in Dallas. Biljana is nationally accredited as an Associate Healthcare
Interpreter™ through Certification Commission of Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI)
and has over 16 years of experience in the industry. Biljana currently serves as
President of the Dallas/Fort Worth-based Metroplex Interpreters and Translators
Association (MITA). We look forward to seeing Biljana’s leadership skills in action
as we continue to grow and strengthen our statewide membership.
