Summer 2016

Forward Magazine

As a SmartWay Affiliate, Airforwarders Association (AfA) encourages you to learn more about the SmartWay Program and become a

Partner. As an AfA member, you may have already heard about the Partnership from industry colleagues or customers.

SmartWay is a voluntary initiative of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and today, over 3,000 companies across the US

and Canada participate in SmartWay. These include Fortune 500 companies, small businesses, trucking, rail and air carriers, multimodal

firms, and logistics providers. To date, SmartWay partners have cut fuel costs by nearly $25 billion and reduced carbon emissions by

nearly 73 million metric tons.

Participation is free…

Participation in the SmartWay Transport Partnership is free-of-charge, and is open to all sizes and types of air cargo carriers, air forwarders

and air freight trucking companies. Each company that registers as a Partner with SmartWay has access to free training, information and

technical assistance. EPA also highlights SmartWay participation at industry events, via the SmartWay website, through social, print and

other media, and by offering recognition for top environmental performers.

Attain your supply chain and sustainability goals…

SmartWay will help you meet increasing demands for corporate transparency and sustainability, while still paying close attention to the

bottom line. SmartWay provides no-cost tracking tools and carbon accounting. The emission metrics that the tools calculate can be

especially valuable for companies concerned about the air quality of the communities they serve.

You may want to know that…

The SmartWay 2016 air calculator tool was evaluated by AfA, professionals from the air cargo industry, academia and other aviation

experts to provide input and feedback on SmartWay’s approaches and methods. This included beta testing the air tool in 2014-15 with

the help of several companies that operate both air cargo and trucking fleets. These SmartWay-registered trucking fleet partners were the

first to become registered SmartWay air carrier partners. The air tool will be available on SmartWay’s website on April 2, 2016, for any air

cargo carrier interested in becoming SmartWay-registered.

Take the next step…

To encourage companies involved in the air freight industry to participate, EPA and AfA have teamed up to offer a special incentive for

air freight companies that are involved in the air freight industry, join SmartWay this year. Each air freight company that registers with

SmartWay as a Partner between April 2 and May 6, 2016, will be published on the SmartWay website. EPA will highlight these new

partners in a special feature in the SmartWay E-Update, seen by over 8,000 companies including leading freight shippers and logistics

companies. And, US EPA will display your company’s name at its exhibit booth during this year’s Air Cargo Conference in Phoenix.

Registering is simple – visit the SmartWay website

), download the air cargo, logistics (forwarder) or

truck carrier tool along with instructions, then send your completed submission to EPA. Once your information is reviewed and quality-

checked, you’ll receive a registration certificate documenting your status as a SmartWay partner.

We hope that you will join AfA and SmartWay in supporting this innovative effort to raise the awareness of leaner supply chains—while

demonstrating year-over-year fuel savings to your customers, employees, suppliers and others in your business networks. This is not only

good business for the air industry, it’s good for business–and the environment.

Thank you for your interest, and we look forward to working with you as a Partner.
