The Culinary Team from Polaris Career Center, Middleburg Heights, under the guidance of Chef Chris Olszewski, earned top marks this year in the culinary competition at the ninth annual Ohio ProStart® Invitational Feb. 20-21, 2011 at the North America Pizza & Ice Cream Show at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. This year’s premier sponsor of the event was Gordon Food Service, a company that has long recognized the important role post-secondary culinary programs play in strengthening the future of tomorrow’s foodservice industry.

The culinary event, sponsored by The Columbus Culinary Institute at Bradford, consisted of very talented students. The winning team members from Polaris Career Center were Doug Ferrell, Domenic Hrazik, Shannon Martincic and Austin Zavodny. The team is coached by Chef Chris Olszewski. Zovodny was also the recipient of this year’s Poultry Fabrication Award.

The second place winner was Lorain County JVS under the mentorship of Chef Kristian Smith. Springfeld-Clark Career and Technical Center, under the leadership of Chef David Hay and Chef Scott Rohrer, placed third and fourth place was awarded to Tolles Career & Technical Center under the direction of Chef Kathy Zay. The ffth place winner of this year’s competition was C-Tec Career Center under Chef Michael Carnahan’s mentorship.

“Yet again, I find myself awed by this year’s students and their imaginative, inspirational achievements,” said Sharon K.M. Fish, the Executive Director of the Ohio Restaurant Association Education Foundation, which oversees and manages the Ohio ProStart program and its competitions. “These students have dedicated themselves to learning as much as they can in the classroom and then applying it in this competition. Their knowledge, skill, motivation and teamwork are key factors of success at this competition. As they move forward in their career and education in the restaurant and foodservice industry, these traits will continue to open doors for them.”

Tolles Career & Technical Center, under the direction of Chef Kathy Zay and Instructor Eric Bauerle, located in Plain City, swept the management category as the number one management team in this year’s competition. The Tolles team consisted of Aleyda Mendoza, Allison Montgomery; Shawna Palmer and Katie Vaughn.

Second place in the management competition was awarded to Cuyahoga Valley Career Center under Chef Barbara Hummer’s direction. Polaris Career Center, under the leadership of Chef Chris Olszewski and Kathy Kostur, earned third place. The team that received fourth place was Lancaster High School under Chef Debra Bates’ direction. Fifth place was awarded to South Stark Career Academy under the leadership of Chef Tom Blike.

The recipient of the ProStart 2011 Teacher of Excellence Award was Kathy Zay of Tolles Career & Technical Center.

The ANCOR Top Management Award was presented to Shawn Mayle of South Stark Career Academy while the Buffalo Wild Wings award was given to Evan Crawford of Eastland Career Center. The American Culinary Foundation presented its Akron-Canton Chapter Top Culinary Award to Jonmorgan Smith of Penta Career Center. The recipient of the 2011 Knife Skills Award was Mindy Anderson of Penta Career Center.
