Fall 2012 Issue
Food for Thought...
In today’s turbulent political climate, the
Ohio Restaurant Association is as committed
as ever at protecting our members’ interests,
which means we are going to fight for your
advocacy needs while you focus on running
your operations smoothly. We understand
that most operators can’t be tasked with
following the daily ups and downs of politics
on a local, state or national level.
It is for this very reason that the ORA’s
Director of Government Affairs Richard
Mason keep his eyes on the political ball
and lets you know when you need to get
involved. Political issues are a reality for
nearly every American today as more and
more government regulation involves itself
in people’s everyday lives. But, our goal
at the ORA is to use the wise investments
our members make in the association
and the Ohio Restaurant Political Action
Committee (PAC) to support candidates
and initiatives that keep our members’
revenue high and alleviate the time they
must spend filing documents with state
and federal agencies.
However, there are times when your
involvement may become necessary.
Then, you will hear from the ORA, either
through one of our communication tactics
or directly from the ORA’s President and
CEO Geoff Hetrick or the aforementioned
Mason on how you can lend your political
weight to a fight. The ORA has compiled
this edition of à la Carte to make you
more aware of how we are fighting for your
interests, what victories we’ve achieved on
your behalf and how we could use your help
moving forward. If you’ve any questions
about the materials found within these
pages, please don’t hesitate to contact me
at: communications@ohiorestaurant.org.

• Connect with the ORA and become
a grassroots advocate. We will let
you know when an e-mail, phone
call or other outreach is needed to
convince your legislator to support our
position on a critical state bill or local
ordinance under consideration.
• Help us by being the eyes and
ears for foodservice in your local
community. Let us know about
an issue that could be potentially
damaging to restaurants.
• Attend ORA’s annual advocacy golf
outing in Columbus. It’s a great way to
support the industry and connect with
industry peers from across the state.
• Support your industry PAC. We need
every member to contribute at least
$50 annually in order for us to attend
legislative fundraisers and support
candidates from both parties who
understand the needs of our industry.
Checks must be personal (not
corporate) and must be made payable
to the Ohio Restaurant PAC.
Like it or not, times have changed. No
longer can you simply focus on what goes
on inside your business’ four walls. To do
so will put you and every other operator at
a severe disadvantage. Although you can
rest assured that the ORA will work hard to
create an environment that will allow you
to operate profitably, maximum success
will only be realized once you and every
other ORA member makes the commitment
to become a partner in advocacy. Can we
count on you?
