Eugene Weston III,
a “proud unreconstructed Modernist” was born
in Hollywood in1924. A third generation architect, WWII veteran, and
graduate of the Art Center College of Pasadena, he designed notable
midcentury modern houses before moving to La Jolla in 1960. With
Fred Liebhardt, he formed Liebhardt, Weston & Associates, whose 30
year history received numerous awards for residential and commercial
projects, including the Wiley Residence (Architectural Record House,
1965), UCSD Natatorium and Women’s Gymnasium, SIO Research
Library, LJ Country Day School, Wild Animal Park, Anthony’s Fish
Grotto, and the Old Globe Theater. He was an active volunteer on
design and planning issues, even through retirement. Mr. Weston
passed away in 2012, survived by his wife, Wanda, children, grand
and great-grandchildren.
Paul McKim
, born in Indiana in 1931, graduated in architecture with
honors from the University of Illinois in 1960 after serving in the Korean
Conflict. He settled in San Diego because he believed it could become
a great city. His many volunteer efforts, energy, and leadership strongly
influenced the development of the Downtown and Waterfront of today.
His restoration of an old downtown brick warehouse complex in 1970
led the way for downtown redevelopment and showed the value of
adaptive reuse.
Numerous design awards have highlighted Mr. McKim’s long and
continuing career. His enthusiasm and dedication to creating better
environments for people have inspired many other professionals and
helped to shape their careers.
