To ABYC Members and Supporters
It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of our
Board of Directors’ Chairman, Jack Hornor.
Jack was a close friend and mentor and very proud of his
position and association with the Council. Jack died on
October 1 of a brain disease.
For those of you who knew him, I know that you will miss
his expertise, humor and wit. He will truly be missed.
Sincerely,
John Adey,
ABYC President
Jack Hornor

Jack was a stickler for the Standards! Thanks to Bob
Adriance on ABYC’s Tech Board who shared the cover
photo from BoatUS Marine Insurance on what happens
when ABYC Standards aren’t applied:
“How could a 36’ sailboat with over three feet of freeboard
be shoved under water by a few inches of snow? Because
a plastic through-hull that was an inch or two above the
waterline had cracked and the weight of the snow lowered
the damaged fitting to just below the surface. Water then
began entering through the crack and the boat gradually
filled with water and sank. Plastic deteriorates quickly in
sunlight, which is why ABYC’s H-27 standard requires that
through-hulls above the waterline must now pass a UV
test. As a result, this sort of sinking is far less common
than it once was.”
