up the entire west coast to Seattle. These
fellows know what to look for when you
are going offshore on a boat! Finally, Tim
Murphy, who spent his formative years
living on a cruising sailboat rounded out
our judging panel. Tim knows a thing
or two about what to look for on a boat
you are going to spend weeks, months,
and maybe even a few years living on.
Tim is also my co-author on the ABYC
textbook,
Fundamentals of Marine Service
Technology
. Tim is working directly with
me in the development of our upcoming
online programming as well as the
upgrading and re-formatting of all of our
study guide books.
Additionally as a part of our BOTY judge
duties, we all served on a panel along with
two well-known boat designers, ABYC
past chair Gerry Douglas from Catalina
Yachts and Tim Jackett, who has worked
with Tartan, C + C and most recently
Island Packet Yachts in collaboration
with Bob Johnson at IP in designing their
new Blue Jacket 40 performance cruising
sailboat. This was a presentation given at
the Annapolis Sailboat Show and provided
a great venue for the large audience in
attendance to pick our brains on the ins
and outs of boat design, service, standards
issues or just questions and a look at the
future as we all see it. This opportunity
gives me a great chance to wave the
ABYC banner to the boating public and is
something I’ve looked forward to for each
of the last several years.
Finally, let me shout it out! The new and
improved ABYC Electrical Certification
is out! We have a new study guide and it
is currently shipping. The new guide is
a good example of the direction we are
headed with all of our guides, making
them more like true text books. It’s
important to note the ABYC Electrical
Certification exam has also been updated
as well so those of you that may be coming
up on re-certification should seriously
consider getting a copy of the new study
guide to review before sitting for the
new exam. There have been quite a few
changes in the electrical standards in the
last several years as well as a new standard,
A-32 AC Power Conversion Equipment
and Systems. The new study guide has
content that addresses all of the new areas
from within the existing as well as the new
standard.
Next up on the renewal list is our Marine
Systems Exam and Guide. This will
have major updates to the electrical, fuel
system and AC and refrigeration sections
contained within.

Electrical Certification is out!
